A13.5: Week 13 Reflection
November 28, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To review my previous work and make improvements.
- To organize my multigenre research project.
- To create my reference page for my project.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned a new way to revise papers. It is called the SCAR method. I think that it is very interesting and it really helped me improve upon my work. I worked on my reference page and learned more about APA format. I think that this is really helpful. I also learned how to organize a table of contents for my page.
Procedural Knowledge:
To create the table of contents I logged on to my wordpress account. I went to my dashboard and clicked write. I then clicked write page. I wrote the page and added the links by clicking the chain after highlighting the words that would contain the link. I also made the table of contents the parent page for all of my MRP. I did this by clicking on my previous work in manage and selecting the table of contents as the parent page. I then went to the class website and clicked on Crissa’s link. I reviewed her podcast by answering the questions that were posed by the instructor. I then went back to the class website and clicked on Meredith’s link and reviewed her PowerPoint Presentation. I returned to wordpress and logged in. I created my reference page by using the APA manual and sources that I have found while doing this assignment. To complete the revision I printed a copy of my guest editorial. I then went through the piece and edited it using the SCAR method. I asked myself if words could be substituted, should I cut anything, does anything need added, and if I needed to rearrange anything. This method really helped me improve my work.
Conditional Knowledge:
I think that learning the SCAR method will help me revise future work. I found this method to be very effective. It helped me make my work more cohesive and understandable. The table of contents helped me with organization. Learning to organize will help in school work and in my future professional life. Learning about APA is continuous and will help me throughout my life.
Question:
I really don’t have a question about the work but since Thursday was Thanksgiving, which do you prefer turkey or ham?
A12.7: Week 12 Reflection
November 14, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To complete my PowerPoint presentation.
- To go back and review my previous work.
- To learn more about digital literacy
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned how to put a PowerPoint presentation on my weblog. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. I integrated my work on the types of digital literacy and learned that this literacy is very important and will continue to impact our society. I also learned what a preface and the acknowledgements of a piece of work should contain. Now I might just read those two sections of books.
Procedural Knowledge:
To begin my assignments I wrote the About the Author section of my work. To do this I went back to my previous introduction and revised it a little. I then went to wordpress and published my work. I added this work to the Multi-genre research project page that I have developed. I then went to the class webpage and read what a preface and acknowledgements section should contain. I thought about why I did my project and who I would want to thank. I posted these on wordpress. I then responded to my groupmates sixth genre by going to their websites and reading their project. I analyzed the project and I thought about how the project could be improved. I posted my thoughts by using the comment feature. I then reviewed what I had previously learned about the types of digital literacies and combined what I had learned into a comprehensive piece of work. Throughout the week I developed my PowerPoint by using the program. I selected the layouts and backgrounds that I wanted. I used pictures that I had taken of devices available at Marshall and some from websites. Once this was completed I went to wordpress and uploaded the file. When it was uploaded I sent it to my page. I then completed my weekly reflection.
Conditional Knowledge:
Learning about digital literacy has been very helpful to me. It has helped me sharpen my skills and be a better student. The PowerPoint presentation is very useful because you can use them for so many things. I like how professional they make your work look.
Question:
When is our final work due on the MRP?
A11.4: Week 11 Reflection
November 7, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To take pictures of some augmentative devices that our clinic has available. I want to do this to prepare my Power Point presentation.
- To complete my assignments. I wanted to complete my assignments and learn from the experience. I just didn’t want to do them, I wanted to really learn. So my main goal was to not just do the assignment but to pay attention to what I was doing and what I was learning.
- To give my groupmates helpful suggestions about their projects. I want to help my groupmates improve and I hope that they feel the same way.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned about the final type of digital literacy, socio-economic literacy. I now know that this literacy helps individuals safely navigate the internet. It includes knowing proper net-etiquette and being able to protect yourself from predators. I also was able to learn from my groupmates suggestions. These suggestions are helping me prepare for revisions to my project and improve upon my work.
Procedural Knowledge:
This week I began my assignments by going to the class website. I then responded to my groupmates fifth genre by going to their websites and reading their project. I analyzed the project and I thought about how the project could be improved. I posted my thoughts by using the comment feature. I then researched socio-economic literacy by going to yahoo and typing in the words socio-economic literacy. I know that I use Yahoo a lot but that is the search engine that I am most comfortable with so I tend to use it instead of other search engines. I read some articles and gathered my thoughts on this literacy. I then went to wordpress and posted this assignment. I then did my journal entries. My journal entries are my integrating genre so I thought of how I wanted to lead my audience to the answer to my question. I structured this genre so that it would do this. I wrote it out on wordpress and added in the links to my pages by highlighting the keywords and clicking on the chainlink. I then typed in the address of the page and clicked save. Next week I will add the link to my Power Point presentation. This is how I completed my assignments this week.
Conditional Knowledge:
Learning about the digital literacies has been very useful. The one that I learned about this week will help me protect myself while I am surfing the net. I think knowing about this will help me keep my kids safe in the future, if I have kids. The integrating genre has taught me how I can integrate my work so that it becomes a comprehensive piece that answers and important question, which will be helpful to me as a student and professional. Being able to grow and improve from suggestions will also help me as a future professional. This is how I can use what I learned.
Question:
Should the integrating genre contain additional information or should it just make your project cohesive?
A10.5: Week 10 Reflection
October 31, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To continue my research on Broca’s aphasia with apraxia. Due to some other assignments I have not been able to do anymore research and I want to continue to look for new information, so my project is up to date.
- To learn more about Podcasting. I have never podcasted but after learning how to I find it very interesting.
- Completing all of my assignments for this class and making sure that they are accurate.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned about podcasting. I learned that podcasting is making an audio file available to other people. We learned how to do this by phone which was really cool. I learned more about apraxia and how it affects speech production. I learned more about digital literacies, in particular reproduction literacy which I think is the most important literacy to know about, because it can help you determine if a source needs to be cited or not.
Procedural Knowledge:
This week I began my assignments by going to the class website. I then responded to my groupmates fourth genre by going to their websites and reading their project. I analyzed the project and determined how I thought the project could be improved. I posted this by using the comment feature. I then researched reproduction literacy by going to yahoo and typing in the words reproduction literacy. I read some articles and gathered my thoughts on this literacy. I then went to wordpress and posted this assignment. Throughout the semester I have been lurking onto an online community and this week I had to post my observations of that community. I thought about what I had read and answered the questions that were posed, I also made some additional comments. I then did my Podcast. To do this I created a script of what would be said. I also provided the scenerio and gave background information. I then called in my Podcast to gcast.com and it was posted. To post the podcast to my website I had to go to gcast and link the page that the podcast was available on, because the site is not compatible with the player needed to hear the Podcast. This is how I completed my assignments this week.
Conditional Knowledge:
Learning about digital literacy has helped me realize the skills that I possess and the one’s that I need to improve upon in order to be successful. Learning more about online communities has helped me realize that they can be a valuable resource to a person researching or learning about things. This has encouraged me to join other online communities to find things out about different populations. This is a very valuable tool. Learning to Podcast was really cool and could essentially be used as a student or a professional. Everything that I have learned this week is very valuable.
Question:
What other Podcasting sites have you used, if any?
A9.5: Week 9 Reflection
October 24, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals this week were:
- To write my fourth genre. I really wanted to complete this genre and make sure that it could be integrated into my topic.
- To learn more about branching literacy. I never realized how the things that I think are common knowledge are classified. I think that it is really neat that there are a ton of different types of digital literacy.
- To reflect upon the suggestions that my classmates have made in order to improve my work.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned that branching literacy is a type of digital literacy. This literacy includes being able to operate technology and map how you used the technology to get to places. I learned more about how I could improve my work through reading my groupmates comments. I also have learned more about alternative treatment options for a person with severe Broca’s aphasia with apraxia by talking to professors and researching sources.
Procedural Knowledge:
I began this weeks assignments as I usually do by going to the class website and viewing the reading assignments. I then went through my email and read some of the mailing list emails that I have been receiving. I then did the branching literacy assignment by going to Yahoo and typing in branching literacy. I chose two helpful websites and reflected on the questions that were asked. I went to my weblog and posted the response. I then went to my groupmates websites and posted my comments. I have really enjoyed reading their projects and providing helpful feedback. I researched my topic further and wrote it on paper. I am doing some last minute revisions but plan to post it this evening.
Conditional Knowledge:.
I really think that it is important to know about the different types of digital literacy. This will allow you to improve upon these skills and even teach others how to use them. This will help as a lifelong learner. I also think that it is important to be able to make suggestions without criticizing and I think that we are learning to do that by reviewing each others work. This will really help us in our careers.
Question:
When are we going to learn how to Podcast?
A8.5: Week 8 Reflection
October 17, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To revise my project prospectus. I wanted to review my prospectus and determine what I needed to do to answer my essential question. I structured my foundation questions in a way that would lead to the conclusion that I wanted people to come too.
- To complete my third genre. I wanted to complete my third genre and make sure that it would answer a foundation question that was vital to my research.
- To provide my classmates with helpful feedback. I wanted to help my classmates improve upon their work and give them positive feedback.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned more about information literacy. I learned that it is a skill that is vital for survival in today’s society. I think in order to be a life-long learner, good student, and professional you need to possess this skill. It will help you determine when information is needed and how you can obtain the information.
Procedural Knowledge:
The first assignment that I tackled this week was responding to my classmates second genre. I went to their websites and read their genre. I then asked myself the following questions:
- What voice was it written in?
- Who was the target audience?
- What is the author saying?
- What is good about the work?
- How can the work be improved?
I answered these questions and posted my comments to their webpages. I then researched information literacy and reflected on the importance of it in today’s society. I posted my thoughts to my weblog. After meeting with Mrs. McComas I revised my prospectus. With her help I determined what questions I should ask in order for my audience to come to the conclusion that I wanted them too. I then decided what my third genre would be and did some additional research through databases.
Conditional Knowledge:
Knowing more about information literacy will help me improve upon my skills and be more literate. This skill will help me throughout my life. I think that is a critical skill to possess in today’s society. The research project is really helping me as a student and future clinician. I think that I am learning a lot of valuable information about my topic.
Questions:
When citing within the poem, for example, I put broken speech (which is my way of saying agrammatism), I learned this from a source, so can it be cited as a summary?
A6.5: Week 6 Reflection
October 3, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To complete my assignments by Saturday. I planned to complete all of my work by Saturday in order to receive feedback, but due to life I was unable to do it. Although, I did complete the one assignment that I really wanted feedback on, my prospectus.
- To outline my multigenre research project. I wanted to determine exactly what I wanted to do for my project. Once I had selected all of the genres that interested me I determined from who’s prospective I would write the project in.
- To learn more about wordpress and APA format. I think learning more about both of these will help me with my projects.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned what a prospectus is. A project prospectus helps you outline a project and determine the point that you want to make with the project. I think that this is a very good way to begin any project that you do. I learned more about searching the databases while doing the second library search. I figured out that capitalization can cause your search results to change, which I think is very interesting. I learned more about myself when chatting on tapped-in. By reviewing the conversation and reflecting, I thought about how I contributed and what I could have done to contribute even more. I also learned how to use the archives, which was very interesting.
Procedural Knowledge:
I began this week by completing the reading assignments, by going to the class webpage, clicking on week 6 assignments, and then clicking the links to the websites. I then began my project prospectus by looking at the instructions. After I did this I determined what point I was trying to make and the genres that I planned to use in order to get my point across. I then wrote a draft on paper. After, writing my draft and making some changes I went to my webpage and posted it as a new page and copied the link to an email and sent it to the class. To complete the library search I went to the library page and clicked on article databases. I then chose a database and searched within scholarly articles. I typed out the citations in wordpress and posted them. After I posted them I copied and pasted to notepad in order to do my indentations. Once I made my indentations I editted the post and pasted the correct APA format of the citation. When thinking about the web evaluation, I looked back at previous assignments. I then gathered my thoughts and posted them. In order to the reflection on 9/13/06 I went to the class webpage and clicked archives. I then had to set up a password. After that I was able to find the previous tapped-in conversation of my group that was sent via the class mailing list. I read the chat and thought about the questions that were asked. I then posted my answers to my weblog.
Conditional Knowledge:
Using a prospectus can help you complete assignments efficiently. It really outlines your plan of action. I think that this will also be a wonderful tool to use in clinical work. The research is continuing to help me become a better searcher which will definitely help me as a student and a clinician, especially when it comes to evidence based practice. Being able to reflect on a previous conversation really helped me as a student. It helped me understand what I did well and what I could have done to make the conversation better.
Question:
Is there a simpler way to get the citations to indent?
A5.3: Week 5 Reflection
September 26, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To continue my research and improve upon my research strategies. I am learning more and more about being a successful researcher. I am hoping to refine and improve my skills each week.
- To learn more about APA citation. I think that citing sources is one of the most difficult things to do. One thing I do not understand is why most high school teachers teach MLA format and not APA. Learning APA is an ongoing process and I learn more with every assignment.
- To learn how to create an annotated webliography. I never have heard of this term until I received my assignments. I had to do some research to find out more about it.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned more about customizing my weblog. I learned to add hyperlinks and pictures. I learned about copyright and fair use (which is not clear cut). Copyright is a very in depth subject. I know more about searching and how to successfully search different databases. A lot of the databases will tell you what you should or should not include in your keywords which is great. I now know what an annotated webliography is and I even created my own.
Procedural Knowledge:
To begin this weeks assignments I accessed the class weblog and linked to the required readings. I then went to the Marshall Library page and clicked on databases. Once the page loaded, I clicked on the database I wanted to search within. I then typed in the keywords and selected limiters when possible. When I found the articles that I wanted to use for my project I clicked the e-mail button and e-mailed the articles to my account. Once I had found the articles I planned to use I followed the format outlined in class instructions and typed out the bibliographies according to the APA Manual. I then e-mailed the assignment to the class. After this assignment was completed, I went to the class webpage and looked at the instructions for the annotated webliography and the edublogs resource manual. When I understood how to do the assignment I made a list of my favorite websites. I then categorized them into the categories outlined in the assignment. When I wanted to type a hyperlink I would select the word or words that I wanted to be clicked on and then select the linked chain and fill out the designated information. When I had completed this assignment I e-mailed the class the link to my page by copying the link and pasting it into the text box.
Conditional Knowledge:
Learning about Copyright will help me build my webpage properly and not break the law when using pictures or information from other websites or sources. Learning more about APA will help me throughout my college career and even when I get a job. It will allow me to successful cite sources that I have used when writing a paper. Being able to search the library databases helps me be a better researcher and a successful student.
Questions:
In your opinion, should it be required for high school teachers to teach both APA and MLA format?
A4.7: Week 4 Reflection
September 19, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
- To focus on researching Broca’s Aphasia. I wanted to do this so I would be able to improve upon my question and to learn more about my topic.
- To learn more about searching on the Internet. In order to successfully retrieve information on my topic I wanted to learn more about online searches and search engine.
- To read some of the e-mail from my mailing list. I wanted to do this so I could understand more about the mailing list and who the mailing list primarily serves.
- To complete all of my assignments. I wanted to do this so I would learn more about this class and my topic.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned to evaluate websites, in order to determine if the website was reliable. This is done by checking the reliability of the author, the reliability of the publisher, the author’s point of view or bias, the referral to and knowledge of the literature, and if the information is current. I learned about collaborative software and what it can be used for. I didn’t realize that things as simple as chatrooms and e-mail were collaborative software. I learned more about my topic and perfecting a research question and that foundation questions need to be formed in order to answer the research question. A good research question will have at least three foundation questions and at the most six foundation questions.
Procedural Knowledge:
To evaluate the websites, I went to the class website and clicked on the particular link to the evaluation worksheets. I then looked at the websites and carefully answered each question that was asked. I wrote my responses and posted them to my weblog. To complete the writing assignment on collaborative software, I went to Yahoo! and typed in collaborative software. I then looked at a few sites that were returned and answered the questions that were asked. I posted my responses to my weblog. In order to develop my search strategy I read the document that was assigned and thought about how I personally wanted to research my topic. I developed my strategy and then posted it. Developing my research question and foundation questions involved looking at my original question and thinking of things I could do to make it more specific and what I could ask to get information. To post to other classmates weblogs, I went to bloglines and clicked on the updated pages. I then clicked on what I wanted to comment on and made my comment.
Conditional Knowledge:
Learning more about researching and evaluating websites will help me in all of my classes and even in my career. It will enable me to make good decisions about what websites I should use. This is a skill that all students need to learn in order to be successful.
Questions:
Is there any collaborative software available that is specific to the field of speech language pathology? Is there any specific software available for PDA’s that could be used by a speech language pathologist?
A3.8: Week 3 Reflection
September 12, 2006
Aims and Objectives:
My goals for this week were:
• To improve my writing skills when doing my weekly assignments. I sometimes tend to write in a hurry, which makes it incomprehensible. This week I want to take my time when completing my assignments and read over them. I want to edit and make corrections as necessary.
• When I read, especially stuff on the internet I sometimes drift away from my reading. My goal this week is to stay on task when reading and to gain some insight from the assignments.
• To develop a good research question. I want to do this so that my research is directed and comprehensible.
Declarative Knowledge:
This week I learned about search engines. I did not realize that there were different types of search tools until completing the reading assignments. My favorite is still the good old fashioned search engine. Alternatives to the search engine are meta-search engines, subject directories, and invisible web. Another favorite search tool of mine that we looked at this week is databases. I also learned about framing essential questions. One main point that stood out in my mind about this is that essential questions must spark your curiosity.
While completing the weekly assignment I learned how to join a mailing list. I now know that when you make the request you must type exactly what the website tells you to in order to join it. I did a name search and a topic search on different types of search tools. I can honestly say I prefer the search engine. I learned that I was a multimodal learner when I took the VARK inventory and looked at some strategies to improve my skills. I learned how to formulate a research question and by reflecting on past experiences as a learner I learned more about myself.
Procedural Knowledge:
To complete the reading assignments, I went to the class webpage. I then clicked on Week 3 Assignments and clicked on each reading that was assigned one at a time. I then went to my weblog and created a new category by clicking on manage and then categories. I typed in the categories name and selected create. To join a mailing list I typed in the address given in the weekly assignments. I clicked on a topic I was interested in and wrote down the information that was needed in order to join. I then went to my e-mail address and typed in the needed information and sent it to the designated address. When I received the conformation that I had joined I forwarded to the class mailing list.
When doing the search assignments, I went to three different search tools. I typed in the topic and clicked search. I made a note of how many hits were returned and proceeded to open up some of the hits to analyze the accuracy of the search. I wrote about my results and e-mailed the class list. I then posted the results and added some additional information to my weblog. When I began my reflection on learning I thought about my past experiences and wrote a draft. I edited the draft and then posted it. To complete the VARK Inventory I went to the class webpage and clicked on the link. I answered the questions then recorded the results and read the helpsheet. When formulating my research question, I reflected on my interest and chose one that I thought I could do my best work on. To complete this assignment I thought about what I read and formulated what I think is a good research question. To make a post and complete the writing assignments, I went to wordpress.com and logged in. I then went to the dashboard and clicked on write. I then clicked on write post. I entitled my post with what was assigned and wrote my thoughts on the prompt that I was responding to. In one case I created my own prompt. After I finished responding I hit publish. To post a comment to a classmates post, I went to their webpage and clicked on the post. I filled in the needed information and wrote in my comment. When I was finished I clicked on submit.
Conditional Knowledge:
Learning more about the internet will allow me to be a better researcher. I think that it is necessary to know about the different ways of searching in order to get good, accurate information. This will also help me be a lifelong learner. Learning more about myself is allowing me to become a better person. Through the personal reflections I am able to look back and see how much I have grown and changed as a person. Formulating a research question is important because it will help me throughout my career. By doing this I will be able to study a particular area in great deal and come to a better understanding. This will help me be a better clinician.
Question:
What are some of your favorite search tools? Do you find that a lot of students prefer the good old fashioned search engines? What do you think is the most effective search tool?
